Hello!
Firstly, a disclaimer: data is skewed due to the fact that I only started listening on my own Spotify account in August.
On to the good stuff.
The end of the year brings Spotify wrapped. That's if November counts as the 'end of the year'. Guess I'm a little late to the party.
So here we go, let's break down my listening for the past few months. It's worth a laugh.
Exhibit A: My Top Genres
Of the 11 genres I've listened to since August, these came out on top. Have a feeling it's the same suspects as last year...!
Not entirely sure how both Broadway and Classical ended up on top- especially since they don't quite correlate to my top songs, or album. But I guess I have an eight hour plane journey to blame. Eight hours of Mahler 2 on the way out, and eight hours of 'Carrie' on the way back. Not half bad if you ask me.
Exhibit B: My Sound Town
Oopsies. I have nothing to say. Other than Oxford did in fact come up as my Mum's Sound Town (where I listened from January-July).
Exhibit C: My Top Song
876 songs played this year. And unsurprisingly, it's the second song, 'Er, der Herrlichste von allen' from Frauenliebe und Leben that takes the top spot. A heartthrobber that speaks for itself, and a fabulous recording. My first listen definitely wasn't on 8th August though. I was obsessed throughout the exam season. (Photosynthesis and Schumann is an elite combination)
Exhibit D: My Top Songs
It's no coincidence that my top five are all from the same album- which has definitely got to be my favourite album this year. I'll have to write a separate post about why it's such a fantastic concept, but featuring Lieder by both of the Schumanns, and piano music by Robert Schumann, it's a treasure trove for fans of this power couple. Listening to Frauenliebe und Leben alone is an emotional experience, but listening to this album in its entirety brings a whole new perspective to the song cycle, and subsequently provides the listener with an emotional rollercoaster of a journey.
The two songs by Clara Schumann are a delight- 'An einem lichten Morgen' and 'Liebeszauber'. I'd highly highly recommend both of these songs, especially if you've listened to (and inevitably enjoyed) 'Liebst du um Schönheit'. Happy to see that they both made my top five!
Exhibit E: My Minutes Listened
This is probably the most distorted figure, because over half a year of listening is not included. But 29th August was the Mahler 2 plane journey. So at least that adds up.
Exhibit F: My Top Artists
1.
Ohhh Robert. 1/561. Surprised? Nope. Does this officially make me a nerd? Yes.
2.
Clara. Another unsurprising appearance. Gutted she didn't rank higher than Robert. Still wish she'd written more songs though.❤️
3 & 5.
Album für die Frau and its impact on my listening😍 (I definitely need to start writing that post now!)
4.
When I'm not sat in the Radcam listening to Lieder or Alanis Morissette, I can probably be found listening to 'The Theory of Everything'. The ultimate study soundtrack; engaging, motivating, and not too distracting. It makes me feel like an academic weapon.
Exhibit G: Me in 2023
I don't really get this one. I wonder where the darkness comes from. Carrie? Spring Awakening? Or perhaps Robert Schumann himself.
Accurate representation of my listening? Sort of. Did it make me laugh? Yes. Do I like the Schumanns? YES.
Any surprises? Yes.
I'm slightly shocked to see that not a single recording of Clara Schumann's 'Lorelei' made an appearance.
No songs by Pauline Viardot. Heartbroken.
No Johanna Kinkel either. Gosh, I need to step up my game.
All of my top artists from last year didn't appear this year. Alanis Morissette, The Cranberries, and Collective Soul. I promise I still listen to them too! (As well as art song, of course!)
So Spotify, even though you were full of surprises, its always fun to see your perspective on my listening.
See you next year,
leeky♬
p.s. if any of this music is (mildly) appealing to you, here's my Spotify! Featuring a host of interesting playlist names to say the least?
